THE INDUSTRIAL SUPPLY CHAIN'S PATH TOWARDS DECARBONISATION - Round Table

organised by BFWE

The response of European Institutions and the Italian Government to climate change and the ongoing energy crisis is contained in the NRP: about 40% of the investments allocated are intended to identify and support solutions to reduce direct and indirect emissions, to protect the environment but also as a strategic choice at the business level. If ecological transition, decarbonisation and sustainability are the key words of the new agenda that unites institutions and private companies, not without doubts and problems is the path that the latter have to face, in order to translate the indications into practice, without being subjected to the change taking place. The Round Table will be an opportunity for discussion between representatives of the production chains of energy-hungry sectors, representatives of companies and associations of the fuel distribution sectors, and institutions.

it - Business Models for the Use of Hydrogen in Industrial Sectors

Business Models for the Use of Hydrogen in Industrial Sectors

The project to develop Business Models for the use of hydrogen was born from the desire to refocus attention on hydrogen as a key technological option within the strategy of Community decarbonization, after more than a year of tensions related to the serious crisis that has hit the Italian industry hard in terms of costs and energy security, resuming it with a practical and realistic approach. Through the illustration of two business models dropped into industrial realities, in a hard-to-abate sector the first and in refineries the second, the conference intends to illustrate a methodological approach to the development of concrete projects, putting at the same table the different stakeholders (users, engineers, technologies) for the technical and economic design of simulations in the industrial field.
The conference will present the results obtained during the preparatory work for the development of the Business Models, starting with the description of the end-use sector, the characteristics of the typical "user" company, and moving on to the analysis of the technical sizing of the electrolysis plant and its components, and finally to the economic evaluations of the various components that determine the Levelized cost of Hydrogen (LCOH). The results obtained show how hydrogen can facilitate and contribute to the path of energy and ecological transition, being able to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, especially in sectors such as refining or other gasification sectors where electrification (total or partial) is difficult to achieve. At the same time, business models highlight some critical issues, mostly in economic terms: the conference will be an opportunity to analyze in detail the various cost items and identify the most effective ways to address them.

it - HYDROGEN VALLEYS AND TERRITORIES

HYDROGEN VALLEYS AND TERRITORIES

There are numerous hydrogen research projects-funded, for example, by the FCH-JU and the Clean Hydrogen Partnership-that, over the years, have made it possible to develop and validate individual technologies and system solutions belonging to the hydrogen supply chain (production with large-scale electrolyzers; production from biogas reforming; transport and distribution infrastructure; vehicle power infrastructure; fuel cells for stationary power generation, combined heat and power generation, fuel cells for mobility, etc.). Now is the time to accelerate the growth of an expanded hydrogen market, ranging from widespread uses in the thermal sector, to mobility and industry, and it is therefore a priority to foster the creation of ecosystems, identified as "Hydrogen Valleys", within which supply and demand coexist, and in the context of which cross-cutting issues such as standardization, regulation and certification are addressed. Ecosystems represent cores from which to build upon and then replicate infrastructure and best practices in other application areas. Ecosystems based on the hydrogen carrier can cover different geographical and/or production areas: industrial areas, ports, airports, energy communities, etc. Through the PNRR (Measure M2C2 - Investment 3.1) the Italian government has funded more than 50 Hydrogen Valleys throughout the country. We try to take stock with the different stakeholders involved in the process: the Regions and the companies involved.

it - TECHNOLOGIES, INNOVATION AND RESEARCH

TECHNOLOGIES, INNOVATION AND RESEARCH

The sustainable and efficient production and use of hydrogen is set to generate a strong impact on the development of the Italian and European economies, supporting the development of new industrial manufacturing chains with high technological content and high added value. In this context, technologies that are already commercial or close to commercialization play a key role, both in the field of production (green and low-carbon hydrogen) and transport, storage and end use. For all of them, research and innovation are crucial to sustain and accelerate the path to commercial development and full product competitiveness. In this session, with the support of talks by experts in the field and discussions with companies in the hydrogen supply chain, the expected lines of development for hydrogen technologies will be discussed, the most important areas of research planned at the European and national levels will be identified, and specific application cases for areas of industry and civil uses will be explored.

it - SAFETY REGULATION AND DESIGN

SAFETY REGULATION AND DESIGN

From production to transportation to end uses, there are many components and installations using hydrogen in the future scenarios proposed by the EU and national energy plans. There is an insistence on the need for further research and improvement in the performance of different equipment, but how much has already been done and how much remains to be done in defining the process that would allow hydrogen-enabled systems to be authorized for operation? The discussion aims to outline the state of the art and the key role of a clear definition of rules and regulations for the design and operation of systems employing hydrogen.

it - FROM ZERO TO HERO - Asset building and development opportunities for Italy in the context of international hydrogen financing

FROM ZERO TO HERO - Asset building and development opportunities for Italy in the context of international hydrogen financing

IPCEI, Horizon Europe and the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, Innovation fund, Mission Innovation and Hydrogen Bank are just some of the funding initiatives aimed at supporting the development of the hydrogen carrier and the related supply chain; reinforced by the instruments put in place by member countries (such as those related to the PNRR) they represent an important set of tools to subsidize all stages of project development. Start from the already funded projects to highlight the assets we can count on and at the same time understand the spaces for action on the European (and international) instruments available to fill the gaps and fully develop Italy's international competitiveness potential on hydrogen.
